U.S. manufacturing activity expanded in October, but at a slower rate than reported in September according to new data released this morning by the Institute for Supply Management. ISM's index of U.S. manufacturing activity, based on a survey of U.S. supply executives, slowed to 58.7 in October, 2.1% shy of September's historic 60.8% -- its highest reading in 13 years. Any reading over 50 indicates expansion, according to the ISM's metrics. October marks the 14th consecutive month of growth in the manufacturing sector, and the 101st month of growth for the U.S. economy overall. U.S. manufacturing activity expanded at a steady clip in July, though at a somewhat slower rate than reported in June, according to new data released this morning by the Institute for Supply Management . The ISM's manufacturing index now stands at 56.3% -- 1.5% lower than June's 57.8, but still representative of a thriving U.S. manufacturing sector that is closing in on a full year of expansion.
