MNI Survey: Nevada Adds Manufacturing Jobs Over Past Year, Fueled by Tesla Expansion

Manufacturing employment in Nevada rose significantly over the past year, according to data collected by MNI, compiler and publisher of comprehensive U.S. industrial business profiles. According to MNI’s survey of the state’s manufacturers, Nevada added a net 1,537 jobs or nearly 3% between November 2022 and November 2023.

Nevada Manufacturing Gains in 2023: Industry Trends

Nevada's industrial employment gains were largely led by a massive expansion at the Tesla Gigafactory in Sparks, which was announced at the start of 2023. This drove industrial employment in Sparks up by a third and jobs in Nevada’s battery sector up by 179%, according to MNI.

Additional industries leading gains in Nevada’s manufacturing sector included food containers, up 389% and gypsum products, up 196%.

These were offset by losses in reconstituted wood products, down 96% and commercial printing, down 17%.

The miscellaneous manufacturing sector, which includes products such as toys, jewelry, sporting goods and signs, accounts for the largest percentage of Nevada’ industrial employment, with 7,539 workers. Over the past year, employment in this sector fell by 1.8%.

Second-ranked fabricated metal products accounts for 6,032 workers, down 2.3% over the year, while third-ranked industrial machinery accounts for 4,525 jobs, virtually unchanged year-over-year.

Nevada Manufacturing Trends: City Data

MNI’s city data reveals Las Vegas ranks as Nevada’ top city by number of industrial jobs, home to 17,670 workers, up one percent over the year. Second-ranked Reno accounts for 9,314 jobs, with the city’s industrial employment falling 3.4% over the past twelve months. Sparks ranks third with 8,172 workers, up 33%.

Other top manufacturing cities in Nevada include Henderson with 4,272 jobs and North Las Vegas with 4.226 jobs.

Nevada is currently home to 1,572 manufacturers employing 54,501 according to MNI data.
